The Swedish Transport Agency’s second consultation is here

Over the past two years, we have seen a clear tendency to hold off, particularly within the wind power sector, where many have been awaiting clarification on the upcoming regulations. We therefore feel confident in saying that this second consultation – and the step closer to a final decision – has been eagerly awaited.

The Swedish Transport Agency’s regulations TSFS 2020:88 on the marking of objects that may pose a hazard to airborne traffic came into force in January 2021. The Swedish Transport Agency subsequently decided to review the regulations, including the requirements for marking wind turbines, height limits and other areas in need of updating or clarification.

In December 2024, a new proposal was presented and circulated for external consultation. Following the comments received, the Swedish Transport Agency has now revised the proposal further. As the proposed changes are extensive, the revised proposal has been circulated for a second consultation.

At the time of writing, we are reviewing the various proposed amendments, and the long-awaited new regulations are currently planned to come into force on 1 June 2027.

What we already know is that the requirement to replace outdated aviation warning lights that do not meet the IR requirement remains in place. We are therefore concerned that many are waiting unnecessarily – putting airborne traffic safety at risk every day.
