The second tallest tower in the Nordics illuminated by our obstruction lights

Standing at an impressive height of 200 meters, the newly constructed tower in Karlskrona has earned its name: NKT Crown. As the name suggests, the tower belongs to cable manufacturer NKT and will become a key component of the world’s largest production facility for high-voltage offshore wind cables when it becomes operational in 2027.

Due to its height, the tower requires not just one, but five obstruction lights to ensure it poses no risk to airborne traffic. CHS Controls has been entrusted with supplying these partially customized obstruction lights – just as we did for the nearby tower NKT Lighthouse a few years ago. In accordance with Swedish Transport Agency regulation TSFS 2020:88, four low intensity obstruction lights have been installed at three-quarters of the NKT Crown’s total height, evenly positioned around the tower. One high intensity obstruction light is installed at the top (currently mounted on the construction crane, which temporarily exceeds the tower’s final height).

A tailor-made solution

The four low intensity obstruction lights differ slightly from the standard models typically used. This specially adapted model, called LIT, is installed internally with only a aprox. 35 mm hole drilled through the facade. Additionally, this version has been customized in length to penetrate the tower’s thick walls. Because we were involved early in the project, we were able to propose this solution – which requires pre-cast holes during construction. The compact LIT design has minimal impact on the structural integrity of the tower, and allows for both installation and any future servicing to be performed entirely from inside the tower. The lights are aligned horizontally with the high intensity light on NKT Lighthouse, ensuring visual coherence.

An added advantage of our obstruction lights is their ability to synchronize with other nearby obstruction lights, via GPS.
